Passport recommended when traveling within the EU?

Hi all!

I leave for Prague on Wednesday and starting to pack. I have a Carta d'Identita, but not sure if I need to bring one of my passports (US / Italy) with me. I was in Barcelona in November, but don't remember if the hotel asked for it.
