Likelihood of mandatory In Person return to Italian Consulate after initial appointment

We have an appointment at the Italian Consulate in LA for an elective residence visa. While they consider the application, what is the likelihood of our having to return in person before a decision is made, for instance, to provide additional information or documentation? We would like to do some travel outside California in the weeks following the appointment.
