Codice Fiscal

Good Evening. I will be getting my Italian citizenship through my parents. I understand before I proceed with anything I must get a Codice Fiscal. My question is if something comes up and I cannot go through all the process to become an Italian citizen if i get the codice fiscal will I be in the Italian system or this Codice fiscal is needed anyway? Can i apply for it in the United States, of so what is the website I must go to? Thx!
