Purchasing a vehicle

My wife and I are in the process of finding a vacation property in Italy for ourselves. We are U.S. citizens and plan to spend three to six months a year in Italy. I have learned that it is not possible to purchase a vehicle in Italy and leave that vehicle at our soon to be Italian residence? If this is not true and there are options can you please provide details. Thank you.
