amalfi coast is it possible without being rich? Has anyone restored a ruin

we would love to restore a ruin but we dont have much money. We built our first house so have some experience. Anyone out there tackle such a project themselves?
Also how difficult is it to purchase property in italy as an american? We would want to buy a ruin that has some habitable area.
