Obtaining a Visa

The San Francisco Embassy is just about impossible to connect with. I go to the web page to apply for an appointment about 10 times a day only to get the same message..."all appointments booked-try again later"
I guess this is good preparation for the bureaucracy I'll be facing in Italy.
Does anyone have any suggestions or is this what you all faced?
