moving to San Ramon area

We are Canadians living in the UK and we're being transfered to the San RAmon area in California in June. Both our children will be in High School next year. We just found out that my husband's company won't give us a preassignment trip to find a house and schools. Any advice on schools in the area? We don't mind the kids going to a public school, as long as it's a good school, but I've heard that there has been a lot of cutbacks to education this year. Anyone out there who can help me figure out how to find a good school without actually going there? We can't find a house until we find the school!
