Not looking for gated community

Hi,

I am a single female, 35, and considering a move to Panama. I was wondering if there are safe communities in Panama that are not so . . . "americanized".

I would like to live in a more rural (not completely rural) part of the country, and I would like to avoid the gated communities that are so popular in the US.

Can anyone provide some advice for me, in terms of places to visit and research? Obviously, large housing developments are advertised, because there are profits to be made, but I would appreciate recommendations to find quaint little towns that are more simple, more rugged.
