Cost of living

I see many have offered opinions that it all depends where you live as to how much $$ one will need to spend ... sp in reallity one should only need to have between $1K - $2K in income to live fairly well.

Well I must be missing something when I search available websites to see average rent and home sales. I currently take in from my military retirement and VA disability a little over $3800 a month and am wondering how I would beable to make ends meet even w/ that income.

My wife is originally from Panama and she was able to obtain my residency long ago and our plan was to always return to Panama once the kids got out of school ... which will be May 2010.
