Traveling from Costa Rica to Panama

Hi! My spouse and I (along with our toddler) will be visiting family in San Jose, Costa Rica early in the New Year and wanted to take a trip to Panama City to take in some sights and sounds (actually thinking about moving there). We have heard different things about traveling between the two countries (a lot of it bad) and wanted to see if anyone out there can give us some ideas of what to expect and/or how best to plan (such as how long does it really take by car, how bad are the bus rides, is it really crazy trying to cross the border because its so disorganized, is there a train that travels between the two countries, is it a bad idea to make the trip with a baby, etc.) Really any information that will help us make soem decisions will be appreciated. Thanks!
