JonathanZ, Iformation is good; leaping is is a fun experience, too. we left the US for Kuwait and lived (and loved it) for 4 years before being transered to Abu dhabi in the UAE. You go, look around from a temporary spot, then move to the neighborhood you prefer. We always came up winners. We googled everything @ Panama, followed ads, called interesting places and people and by doing so we came across 'Judy Tovar of EASY TRAVEL' in PC. She runs a service for expats coming into the country. Picks them up at the airport, arranges a hotel in a neighborhood that is comfortable and safe, can take you on tours of the city, provide information of any kind as she is a native, but English speaking. Even though we could travel half way around the world by ourselves, we called her and had her meet us and offer us her services. One time this included and offer from her for a cell phone that we only had to add money to. We used it while there and returned it as we left. She is a treasure trove of information and likely just what you are looking for.
BTW, we ended up buying a 14 acre hillside overlooking the Pacific and the Isle of Canas on the Azuero Penninsula. Can offer more info, just askl.
