On Monday evening, three tourists arrived at Tocumen International Airport from Venezuela - They took a cab and on the way to the city, they were intercepted by two vehicles. The assailants used weapons and beat the driver - however, in the midst of this assault - tourist police arrived and took three of the thugs into custody - one of the vehicles got away. However, police per one news account are concerned that gangs may be targeting travelers arriving at the airport and believe they may be in cahoots with airport employees who are tipping them off as to is arriving.
This is the first robbery of this type I have seen in a while from the airport.
Does anyone have suggestions who takes this route often on how to avoid such a situation? According to news reports the interception happened at a tunnel at Paitilla.
Can you take buses from the airport to downtown? Would this be safer then a taxi in terms of interception?
