Automobile - Rent, lease or buy?

I'm retiring at the end of this August and will be travelling to Panama (Boquete) for an extended stay (6 mon min) by early 2012. I also plan to visit Costa Rica and Nicaragua by car. I might stay longer if I find "the right thing". I'm aware that used cars are more expensive in Panama than in the US, where I now reside. How then is the most cost-effective way to "get around"? Are there lease firms in Panama for a 6mo or longer term? Do you have any experience with long-term rental? I'm looking for dependable transportation - a well-maintained 2-3 yr old vehicle should suffice.
