renting a car

I am working on taking a trip to Panama this August and would like to do some traveling along the Pacific Coast from Anton to Coronado and go north to Penonome and hopefully spend some time in Las Tablas, then back to Anton. I was thinking of taking a bus, primarily for the adventure, but after reading several posts, it sounds like my best option would be to rent a car since I want to be able to stop along the way whenever I want. It looks like I would have to rent a car at Panama International. I have no interest in the city (been there not for me), and just want to hit the road, but it sounds like it can be a real tough challenge just getting to the highway. Any suggestions on what the best way of getting out of the airport would be without ending up on a one way street to downtown Panama?
