Trip info request

Hola,
I am looking for advice, I need a trip plan to Panama the first 2-4 weeks this Dec.
I have lived in Mexico the last 20 years, I'm going solo and am only interested in coastal areas with surf, probably the northern part of the country, West and East coast, need
info on best way to travel(not limited
to a bus please), I don't really want to rent a car if possible, unless it's at a destination just for local travel.
It's not a surf trip, just checking out the areas. Looking for a small town
vibe, or close too? Also, is there
anything that is a don't miss, other
than the canal?
Another question, short plane rides are ok, given that, the east side first, head to the west side by canal, and then???
Any help would be appreciated.
