Copa flights

Hi all. I was looking at Copa flights from IAD (Washington DC) to PTY. The best price is around $580 in March timeframe. Then I searched for a flight to Santo Domingo which has a stop over in PTY, and that flight is only $400! So, I thought I would buy that ticket and just stay in Panama. Has anyone ever done that? I'm concerned that if I dont get on the plane in SD, they may give my seat up.
