Single parent in Panama?

I am still learning this site so forgive me.

I'm going to Panama March 3-8 to look for places to live. I'm traveling alone. I am a single mom of a 4 yo boy. I'm concerned about being tall and blonde and standing out in a 'bad' way. I have traveled to other countries alone and have gotten along very well with locals the places I have been.

I want my son to be able to integrate into the country, school, etc. and he is very friendly as well. I've been reading many post here about possibly having a difficult time since I'm white (actually I'm 'super-white',as in no ability to tan. haha) and the locals thinking gringos are all rich. Maybe I am by their standards but my goal is to live in a 'smaller' town that is safe and have a 'slower' way of life than in the US.

I am an adventurous type but now that I have a little boy, I have to be way more concerned for safety and his adjustment..

Recommendations? Any advise on any topic welcome!
