Dealing with the continuous burning in Panama

How do you folks living in Panama deal with the constant burning by the locals. Seems they burn everything from clothes to everything else around the Country. Doesn't that affect your breathing?. I was in Panama for a month and the constant burning made me sick,

Do you simply get use to it or do you have respiratory problems? Are you concerned about serious environmental issues there?

My only regret when I went is that I didn't get to meet Mark. Awww we must have missed the exit to El Valle. We were everywhere else tho.
