As a companion thread to the Single expat thread, I thought I would post this.

If you marry someone (regardless of age difference) He/she will only be eligible for SSI survivor benefits, if you have lived together as a married couple (in the USA) for a minimum of 5 years.

If you have children ( they each will receive) 1/2 your FRA benefit (up to family max) until they are 18 years old, regardless of where they live, If you wish to also collect the benefit for your spouse (as the caregiver) the 5 year rule will also apply.
