I like to know how things work, so when Robin made a statement about unlocking cell phones, I had to figger it out.
My carrier is Verizon, I would guess every carrier has a different policy. Verizon does sometimes unlock phones upon request I was told, the availability depends on your account. I'm guessing payment history has a lot to do with whether they decide to unlock your phone.
They also said unlocking a phone does not remove the remaining early termination discount. Most phone contracts are for two years then after that you go month to month. After two years there is no early term charge. That may have been the case for Robin, I don't know.
Then I got a surprise. The Verizon rep told me that the Motorola Droid Razr that I got in May of 2012 was already unlocked. It had never been locked!!!!!! She said most people don't know that, well they are not telling people either.
So the only way for anyone to know for sure is to call your carrrier.
