Panama or Ecuador

I'm considering a move in the not too distant future. Trouble is, I can't make up my mind between Panama or Ecuador. I am a disabled Vietnam veteran and presently have a monthly income of $ 2200 + / month. I hope this will increase shortly because of a pending VA claim.

My wife and I are currently separated. At first had my eyes on Panama, but after reading some quotes from expats regarding trash, prices, crime, etc. I'm have second thoughts. Now I have my sights on Ecuador. Does anyone out there have any preference or what the main differences may be?
