Clothing in Panama

I see a lot of posts discussing the costs of food and lodging but no one seems to talk about buying clothes.

Now that we have our reservations to come to Panama in September, I need to find out what I will need for clothing.

Living in SW Florida, we spend the majority of our time in shorts and shirts and sneakers or sandals. Here, that is even acceptable in most restaurants, etc.

Will it be acceptable in Panama?

What about buying clothing down there? Should I buy any new clothes I need for my trip before I get there, or would I be better off waiting and buying there?

I know that anywhere you go, you can find cheap stuff and expensive stuff. I am talking about average, middle income clothes.
