Racism in Panama?

Hello, I am a 55 year old government employee who will be retiring with a decent pension in about ten years perhaps less. I have always dreamed about retiring abroad and have thought about Panama. As an African American, I am concerned about the racial climate, having faced plenty of racism here in the U.S. I know that in Spanish-speaking countries people can be very "color struck" with white Europeans at the top and natives and people of African origin at the bottom. I went to Mexico awhile back, to the Yucatan Peninsula, and while it was beautiful I notice that the people in the high end hotels and stores, as well as on television, were fair-skinned, while the native people, the Mayans, who are very short and dark, were the hotel maids, blue collar laborers, etc.

I know this is an uncomfortable topic, but I would like to know your opinions about this subject before I make the plunge. I know there are prejudiced people every year, but I want my "golden years" to be comfortable and (relatively) free of hassles.
