Driving a car into Panama

I own my car here in El Salvador. I will be moving to Panama for work and was wanting to know if it would be possible to bring my car? When I first arrive there I will not have residency but will be getting it hopefully within the first 6 months.

I have lived in Panama before so I understand how crazy things are. If I just drive it in as a tourist will it be that big of a problem later when I do try to register it? I have had friends just suggest just to get it in then finds some Panama plates to put on it but I don't want to do any thing illegal like that.

Anyone have any experience with this?
