Many retirees move to Panama but after 4 or 5 years they return to the US. If they have bought a property then they have to figure out how to sell it and sometimes they take a loss on it. If they bought a lot and had a home built on it they are giving up all the time and energy it took them to oversee the construction of their home. One of the reasons people leave is that they get bored. Perhaps they are bored because they lack a hobby or interest to keep them going. They have undoubtedly left their old friends and family behind when they came here. One of the most popular hobbies in the USA is gardening. I think Panama offers unique opportunities to garden in a frost-free location. If you get over 1000 meters in elevation you can also grow many temperate plants but you are still frost-free. In the highlands of Chiriqui you have very good black volcanic soil with a high humus content. There are very few locations in the USA that are frost-free and those that are available are very expensive places to live. Hawaii and southern California are very expensive. Southern Florida is not very cheap either and is subject to hurricanes. So gardening with tropical plants can be a good reason to retire to Panama. If you have an interesting hobby you will want to stay here. Of course not everybody is interested in gardening but many people are.
