Coronado CASA news report

Coronado CASA news FYI, received via email from a contact in Coronado:

HOSPICE

Firstly, Sheila spoke about a Hospice Program for English speaking Expats. There is a group organizing in the city but they are also interested in coming out to the beaches. Please read the attached article.

Most probably for our case here, it would be help with in-home care by volunteers, could be as simple as sitting with the patient for a few hours to help the primary care giver a break or time off to shop, it could be that volunteers with nursing skills show the main care giver instructions on how to give needles, etc. etc. Talks are very much in the primary stage and anyone who is interested in this project should contact us so that we can give Sheila the info. We did pass around a sign up list, but since many of you could not attend the meeting, and you are interested in more info, etc. please send me your name, email, and telephone no and we will add it to the list of those who are interested.

Sheila will keep us updated on this project.

ROTARY GROUP

Jackie was here to explain what is Rotary and what they do as an organization. Basically they are interested in making the world a better place and have projects that can help. They are an international organization and have decided to start a chapter in Coronado. They meet on a weekly basis at noon at the restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Coronado Golf & Country Club. (What we know as the Golf Course Hotel) Lunch is served at 12:00 till 1:30. Everyone interested is welcomed. Jackie just needs a confirmation so that she can confirm the quantity of meals that need to be prepared. Jackie can be reached at:[email protected].

Check it out and see if you want to become a future Rotarian!

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS, NOW CALLED HELPLINE PANAMA

JoAnn was good enough to speak about this group and explained the situation of expats in Panama. One of her best suggestions was to refer to yourselves when speaking about a problem, is to call yourselves a tourist. Panama is very much interested in keeping the tourism income alive and have put money where their mouth is. This said, if you are a victim of a crime or suspect an illegal activity, please call the local authorities (i.e. police), best to have reports done. Even if they can not do anything for you at that moment, perhaps the info can help them in ongoing dossiers or be used for future reference. Whatever happens, you need to report it to the police (if only to have a documented incident report for insurance reports - just like in Canada) and then take it to the next level to the DGI.

This is where the helpline can be of assistance, to help you explain the situation or what to do next, This is a group that has been formed to help you navigate these waters. Please go to their website and find out more about them. WWW.Panamahelpline.org. I will be receiving an more in dept explanation of their services and will be forwarding this info to you all.

Other discussions had at the meeting were about:

Litter in Coronado, Cilla passed a petition to be presented to the Coronado Residents Association to solicit help with the trash and start educating the population about keeping their environment clean. If you want to help Cilla with her petition, please do not hesitate to send me a note and I will forward it to her.

Investments, there are various advertisements around offering high levels of return, please be aware and do you due diligence. Ray told us about an investment that he made and is still awaiting funds. My comment (Louise) is that even if it is a Canadian or American that is offering something that sounds great, i.e. too good to be true ... check you facts, as many have been fleeced by people who are charismatic and were believed in because they speak our mother tongue. The repeat sale of a house in the Rey parking lot comes to mind. Things that you would never do at home, now all of a sudden, we trust anyone speaking the language.

This meeting was very good, a lot of new info and hope we have not forgot any other details. If so feel free to refresh our memories.

Please check out the attachments. Have fun reading!

CASA Team
