Checking Out Panama

My wife and I are interested in checking out Panama as a place to retire. I'll be 57 this year and she's younger than I. We are beach people, but have heard and read that it's hot and buggy at the beach in Panama? I'm looking for suggestions on areas to potentially rent in while we decide where we may like to settle down and buy. I like the idea on living on the Caribbean side of the country, put understand that Panama is only 120 mile wide. We'd both like to continue working in some capacity, to be decided. Any comments, suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
