I just booked my ticket to Panama. I was playing with the idea of renting a car, so when the option to rent a car came up for $4 a day for a midsize, s I clicked on it, and came out with a rental for 19 days all told for $106 from dollar. I went on a different forum, and there were some posters who complained that they were coerced into paying for extras they didn't want or need. I called my credit card company and they told me that I am covered for collision(damage and theft) in Panama. Actually, I don't live in the U.S., and the car insurance policy I have where I live does not cover rentals, so maybe I do need liability, but that option did not come up when I filled out the rental form.
Questions-
1. ANy tips on renting at the airport, especially from dollar which is who I have.
2. What is the lowdown on insurance? Will I be forced into more than I need at the counter?
3. Do they have maps at the counter?
4. Anything else I should know about renting/driving in Panama? Would the car actually be more hassle than it is worth? I have driven extensively in the Philippines and Thailand (motorcycle) so I am somewhat used to third world driving, but of course, I don't know the roads at all in Panama.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
