Pet Birds

Has anyone brought a pet bird such as a macaw over? Costa Rica has a law that allows you to bring your bird to their country but not allow the bird to ever leave-as far as we know Panama does not. We want to make sure if anything happens to us that our bird can go back to the USA to the person who will be taking care of him, since he will likely outlive us both. Does anyone have experience with this?
