Amazon recently started to charge sales tax on items shipped to Florida. Since the mail forwarding services available for Panama are based in the Miami, Florida area this means that those of us who use these services and order from Amazon will be charged Florida sales tax. I complained to Amazon about this and they told me that if I supply them with a bill of lading after I receive the item here in Panama they will refund the tax. To me this is an unsatisfactory solution so I have decided not to make any more purchases from Amazon. My viewpoint is that items shouldn't be taxed in the first place since they are being exported. In addition I am not sure if the receipt supplied by PTY 600 would qualify as a bill of laden. It also occurred to me that perhaps PTY 600 and other mail forwarders should try to find a solution to this problem. Perhaps they could get an exemption from the Florida Department of Revenue for item shipped to their location.
