Any helpful hints about moving with a dog?

Hi,
We will be moving in one year to Panama from California. We are bringing our dog, a schnauzer mix. If you moved with your dog, do you have any advice on whether it would be better to use a pet moving service or did you do it yourself....make flight arrangements? I know the requirements needed for entry into Panama...shots, chips, etc. I would love to hear experiences and what worked and what didn't work! If it makes any difference, our dog is very sweet but can frighten easily.
