A hundred years ago in 1914, the Balboa Union Church was formed by a group of U.S. workers at the Panama Canal. These norte americanos brought with them their culture and traditions, one of which was an annual Thanksgiving Service & Feast the Sunday before the holiday. (Thanksgiving in the U.S. is always the last Thursday in November!) That tradition carries on to the present day,
During the worship service, the traditional Thanksgiving hymns (e.g., “Come, Ye Thankful People Come”) are sung, and special prayers and liturgies of appreciation are offered. Following the service, the entire congregation gathers downstairs in the Fellowship Hall for turkey and ham and all the “fixin’s” provided by the Youth & Adult Activities Committee and the members of the congregation. The food always includes traditional stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, corn pudding from special holiday recipes that families bring with them to Panama.
Thanksgiving Sunday Service – like all Sundays at Balboa Union Church – starts at 10 a.m., and the community is invited. Bring a dish to share!
