First time visit to Panama

Planning 2 week trip to Bocas & (perhaps the Highlands) in May. My first of probably many questions: Is this a good time to come and be flexible with my itinerary? I would love to talk to people in Bocas and then decide where to go from there. More scouting for my future than going the tourist route.
