Our friends just stayed at a hotel at Albrook. I won't tell you the name due to their slander laws here in Panama. But be very cautious and make sure you check your debit card charges daily. After they checked out, they paid with their U.S. debit, they received a email 2 hours later that a charge was being processed for approx. $850. at a store in Panama (not the hotel) The hotel was the only place they used their card. So about another 2 hours went by and another charge was coming through for about the same amount from another store in Panama. So,,,,,he said he was pretty sure that the number came from an employee of the hotel. They were internet charging.
He was very glad that he had set up "Alerts" with his bank. Any charge for over $50. they automatically send a computerized email showing that the card was being used. He called his bank and stopped the charges. His bank is now going after the company.
I too have "Alerts" on my cards, and I will go out to the store, and by the time I get home, I have an email showing where and the amount of my charge. Very easy to do and well worth it. I was able to set up my "Alerts" on line from here. We have been here 4 years and have never had a problem. But you just never know. Our friends have been here a year and this is the second time their card has been compromised.
Just a little help in credit card safety here in Panama.....
