Interesting how during the dry season there are so many fires. I wondered about that and so watched carefully and asked around. I am told that for some reason, people think it's a great way to get rid of dead leaves, undergrowth, possibly and unpleasant neighbor, etc.

Part of the fun includes burning plastics and other garbage. Saves a lot of work I guess.....?

We travel almost everyday into the hills behind the Coronado to San Carlos strip and are "impressed" by the amount of blackened land. We saw people lighting fires to open grass areas. No fire control evident,

Right next to our apartment in Coronado is a large open field. It is regularly burnt off along with the dead palm branches etc. It was so bad recently that others in our apartment packed up their computers and important documents fearing that they would have to leave. In the States or Canada of course, if a person is caught lighting fires, it would usually result in a large fine and even a prison sentence. Interesting cultural difference !

I wonder if the concept of lowering our carbon footprint will ever catch on here?
