Considering retiring to Panama

My wife and I are considering retiring to Panama and would love any recommendations or info from the group.

We are 56/48 well traveled and have been to Panama City a few times. I (husband) speak a reasonable amount of Spanish and wife speaks some French. We would both enroll in classes and would be fluent in 6 months.

We would like to live out of Panama City due to both high cost and congestion and are thinking of one of the communities in the David area to live at a higher altitude with better weather.

We want to know if it is realistic to lead a carefree life on about $3,000 a month.

For us carefree means being able to go out to eat when we want and participate in the fun things available. For housing we do not need something large but would want 2 bedrooms and a "Western Style" house or apt with modern conveniences. We would buy a small car as well.

We also would want easy access to excellent health care (what type of health ins plans are available).

Our timeline is probably in the next 6 moths or so.

This is a start but can't wait to see the responses.
