I was reading some of the posts on crime here in panama and thought i woudl say something about bars on windows. I have lived here in panama for 8 years now. When i bought my first house here, I really did not like the idea of bars. However, fortunately our good panamaen neighbors in our very nice neighborhood told us we would be asking for trouble if we didnt put bars on the windows and doors. This was a very good safe upper middle class neighborhood. near the lake in Las Cumbres just outside panama city. We put the bars up and soon we didnt even see them anymore. We slept well at night. We also had an wrought iron wall around the property with an electric gate over the driveway as did most of our neighbors. If you live in a place where most people have bars n the windows and you choose not to have them, where do you think the robbers will go first? I am from the U.S. where in most cities bars are illegal due to fire regulations. We are not used to them at all. Here, everything is made of cement, whats going to burn? Many expats think that a camera system is the best protection. do that too if you like but having a camera system without bars is like shutting the barn door after the cows have gotten out. People often say things like, I have never had bars on my windows and I have always been safe.. You will always be safe until you are not. Prevention is the best cure. The saying goes.. when in rome do as the romans due. when in panama, put bars on your windows and sleep well at night.
