Everyone has heard about the recent crime wave in our small pueblo and surrounding areas. However, there are several things occurring at the same time to help curb future events. First, in addition to Alto Al Crimen, our call-in-for-help bilingual security, we also have RodnyDirect, who can help with our translating, dealing with police, helping with doctors, etc. We also have many more police assigned to our province and the local Boquete Police Dept has cut off all leave time for the officers. Communities are organizing WhatsApp communications and, most importantly, getting to know their neighbors. Residents have been told to keep cameras ready to photograph strangers in their neighborhoods and quickly spread the word. Detectives are gathering clues and once the culprits are caught, they will be put away. It does not appear to be many organized gangs but just one or two groups of 2-3 men. People are becoming more aware of their surroundings and of cars that may be following them. Boquete residents (foreign and local) are working together as these crimes have been against the Panamanians as well. People are buying sprays and horns, installing security bars, motion detection lights and electronic systems, and making their homes less attractive to ladrones. This will end, hopefully before more people get hurt.
