What documents will we need?

Hi,
Finally...we are almost there! Our plan is to rent in the Boquete area, long term. For now, we are not obtaining any visas. What documents will we need to open a bank account and rent a home and pay for utilities...etc. Is a passport enough? I've heard that you need 3 years of tax returns to open a bank account! Is a birth certificate required?
