I found this on another Forum and it is generally good advice for all newbies.
About a week ago, in Volcan, we were without internet, cell phone transmissions, and the Romero's food store checkers could not process credit cards.
Suggestion to all: buy supplies for at least one month ahead always, keep your car and house gas tanks full, and hide some cash for the month in case the ATMs don't work. Don't bury paper money, it mildews! But you can go in a bank and exchange dollars for Martinellis, those Panama Balboa coins that look like a Canadian toonie, a few hundred at a time, and they come in $25 rolls. These could be buried in ziplock bags.
In any kind of crisis, grocery store shelves could be empty in an hour. Suggestion, fill your freezer with meat and cheese, and stock your shelves with imperishables. Extra rice in small bags can line the back of your refrigerator shelves.
You will use up anything you buy for the month in one month anyhow, so keeping at the very least a month's supply is good insurance. Up to 4 months would be better.
You can also buy several months of cell phone cards. Easiest to store the $15 ones, the smaller denominations make good gifts for your workers.
Blessings
