advice for first timer

I'll be travelling to Panama for the first time early next year. I gather airfares from the US are best around May and that would be just about the end of the dry season. This is a scouting trip, I'm thinking of retiring to Panama so I need a 'taster' tour. Please suggest which places you would hit if you had about 8 or 9 days. I don't want to retire right on the on the beach but I would like to be not too far from it. Planning to get around by bus, any advice there? Also where to stay? Don't suppose there's some sort of cheap but clean national hotel chain. Have read about hostels though but don't know how widespread they are.
