Coming to Panama next week

We will be in Bocas del Toro for a week cruising the islands. Then Boquete for at least a week.... What is the availability of ATMS in smaller towns? We don't really want to carry a lot of cash. Where do we stash our passports when out being a tourist? (or do we need to carry them at all times?) We assume that smaller hotels do not have in room safes or safes at front desk. Do I need to lock my suitcase in my hotel room or do I even need to worry about that.?any additional advice is more than welcome. This is our first time "on our own" in Panama. Thx in advance! KP
