overselling by expats

Hey folks
anybody care to comment?
Those of us considering retirement in south or central america hear a whole lot of stories about how cheap things are. Largely from folks who have vested interest in seeing dollars land in in the area.

Can some of you folks comment on how much its being oversold, ie painted as a rosier picture with respect to bang for your buck regarding
- rent of nice secure buildings / condos
- food costs for good quality
- medical
- security considerations.
