Why are so many fires being lit? I've heard a number of authoritative statements.
1. The most common is that people want to get rid of the dry leaves and branches and at the same time like to throw in the plastic and garbage they have lying around while they've got a nice roaring fire underway.
2. I heard another statement yesterday : "it's to burn off the insects and weeds before the next crops are planted" I've talked to a number of farmers about the burning and they say they don't set fires. As well, most of the fires are not in cultivated areas. Many of them are beside the road and other areas which never have had any sort of crop.
So what have you heard?
With the current drought, the arco seco is starting to look like a burned out war zone, especially around San Carlos.
The Bomberos now say they can't fight the fires because they have no water since many of the rivers are now dry. They will use IDAAN treated water for a home threatening fire, but the others they just leave alone.
