Staying with a Host Family

Hi,

I am looking into various accommodation ideas for living in Panama and I have come across the option of exchanging room and board for part time work. Any advice on the pros and cons of this option? I am coming for the US and I know I can stay for 180 days with my passport, but does anyone know if this type of exchange would require a work visa?
