Getting ready to check out Panama

I am hoping to retire to Panama in the next 5 years. My wife and I are planning our first trip to get a first hand look sometime this summer or fall, to the Volcan area. We like the idea of a quiet rural lifestyle. We have done my research about Panama (both good and bad), and feel ready to see for ourselves.

Our current plans would be something in the area of 60K per year budget with a modest lifestyle.

My reason for posting this is to get an idea of what I should be looking at when I get there. What should we check into? Where should we go to get an idea of the lifestyle and culture? Where can I get the real feel for prices without getting caught in the 'Gingo Bingo'? Basically, how do I take the next step?
