Sling Box for TV

First of all, I'm not a techie. However, we've been told there is a new way to get American tv when we move to Panama this fall. It is called a "sling box". You attach it to someone's tv in the States and you can get all the channels they get. Gives you their local channels and we are not sure about subscription channels. Has anyone used this device? Is there another way to get American tv channels, like satellite tv?
