No Spanish - problem?

Hello all,

Wife and I are seriously considering Panama as our retirement destination. We are from a Favored Nation and would likely run a small business once settled since neither of us is the kind to be truly retired.

One issue is that neither of us speak a lick of Spanish. I've heard you should be OK in Panama City but I don't know how true that is. I've also heard that outside Panama City you'd be hard pressed to make it without Spanish.

I'd love to hear from some expats on the issue. How critical is Spanish? Are we insane to even consider Panama without some Spanish skills?

Thanks :)
