During 2017 Panamanians and Extranjeros witnessed very important events in the country that were followed very closely.
The corruption scandal of the construction company Odebrecht, in which politicians from several countries, including Panama, are linked. The previous government and this current administration have been mentioned.
Ramón Fonseca Mora, who served as Minister Counselor and President in charge of the Panameñista Party, said on Thursday, February 9, that President Juan Carlos Varela supposedly received donations from Odebrecht.
Another issue that has sounded loudly and crossed borders is the arrest of former President Ricardo Martinelli, in Miami Florida in response to a request for extradition from the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) as part of a process following the illegal interception of communications (wire tapping) during his government from 2009 to 2014.
The death of former dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega was also one of the events that made it's mark on the isthmus in 2017.
The departure of the Clinton List from the Editorial Group El Siglo and La Estrella de Panamá was also a well-known topic in our country.
The restoration of relations between Panama and the People's Republic of China was another issue that generated great debate in the country and that took many by surprise.
Between November 16 and 22, President Juan Carlos Varela made his first visit to China where he inaugurated the Embassy of Panama in the Asian nation. During their visit, both governments signed 19 agreements.
As a consequence of these agreements, December 1st, Panama and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cultural cooperation.
On a positive note, this year Panama for the first time achieved its pass for a football world cup and the Panama anthem will be heard in Russia in 2018.
