Cell Phone help

Sorry for a neophyte question but I have about 5 months left in the states before we relocate. I need a Cell phone here (as my company took mine on retirement) for the next while and then one for my wife and I in Panama. As long as it's not tied to a specific carrier, can I use the cell phone purchased here as my Panama phone? Must I change SIM and likely will lose my US number? Sorry, trying not to waste money so appreciate your help.
